Bioremediation potential of spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) for decontamination of cadmium in soil
نویسندگان
چکیده
Greenhouse pot culture studies were conducted to evaluate the bioremediation potential of spinach for removal of cadmium. The results indicated that spinach was able to take up cadmium in substantial quantity in the shoot. There were no visual cadmium toxicity effects on spinach and no significant reduction in the dry matter yield up to 20 μg g cadmium. Significant growth retardation of fenugreek crop grown after spinach was observed at all the levels of cadmium, with no cadmium uptake in the shoot. This study revealed that spinach is a cadmium-tolerant crop and can be used for phytoremediation purpose.

Disastrous effect of nickel on spinach was discussed by number of authors but the effect of amendments like biochar with nickel on Spinacea oleraceaL. is not still discussed by any author of the world because biochar was used as soil amendments which play a vital role in reducing mobilization and uptake of nickel by spinach plants. As nickel contaminated plants are very harmful for th...
متن کاملSpinacia oleracea L. extract attenuates hippocampal expression of TNF-α and IL-1β in rats exposed to chronic restraint stress
Background: Restraint stress causes inflammation in nervous system that leads to emersion of neurodegenerative diseases. Spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) contains different agents with antioxidant, antiapoptosis, and hepatoprotective properties. This study examined the effect of spinach hydroalcoholic extract (SHE) on TNF-α and IL-1β expression in hippocampus of male Wistar rats exposed to chroni...
متن کاملEffect of Cadmium Levels on Seed Germination and Seedling Growth of Spinach (Spinacia oleracea) Under Salinity Stress
Cadmium is highly toxic heavy metal. Soil factors such as pH, caution exchange capacity, CaCO3 content and salinity have a significant influence on Cd uptake by plants. Moreover, soil salinity has a great impact on crop yield in Iran. Therefore, the effect of four salt levels (0, 45, 90, 180 mM) of NaCl solutions and four concentrations (0, 15, 30, 60 ppm) of Cadmium sulfate solutions on seed g...
